Making YouTube Safer for Kids

YouTube Kids

YouTube Kids is a standalone app created by YouTube to be a more “kid-friendly” version of the video portal. The app has parental control features like a timer, and the ability to block videos or channels. There is also the options to disable the search feature and create security passcodes.

While this app is a good starting point for protecting young children from upsetting content online, it is not perfect and needs to be used with parent supervision. YouTube Kids has drawn controversy for including some inappropriate videos and ads, both as direct advertising and more deceptive ads that look like content.

Restricted Mode

If your family is using the original YouTube app, you can enable Restricted Mode. Restricted Mode is an optional setting that you can use on YouTube to screen inappropriate content that you don’t want your family to see. When it is turned on, users also can not see the comments on videos.
